Eating Disorders can have Serious Physical and Mental Health Consequences

Eating disorders are a group of mental health conditions that involve abnormal eating habits and a distorted body image. The three most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by a fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image. People with this disorder may restrict their food intake to the point of starvation, and may also engage in excessive exercise or other behaviors to control their weight.

Bulimia nervosa involves recurrent episodes of binge eating, followed by behaviors such as vomiting or using laxatives to try to rid the body of the excess calories consumed during the binge.

Binge-eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of binge eating without the compensatory behaviors seen in bulimia nervosa.

Eating disorders can have serious physical and mental health consequences, including malnutrition, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal problems, depression, and anxiety. They can also lead to social isolation and problems with relationships.

Treatment for eating disorders typically involves a combination of medical, psychological, and nutritional interventions. This may include therapy, medication, and support from a team of healthcare professionals, including a registered dietitian.
